MARQUETTE -- Although it might be too cold to go to the beach just yet, the Waterfront Safety Task Force wanted to get Marquette ready for summer with the first ever Water Safety Week.

In an effort to help beachgoers feel more comfortable by the water, the American Red Cross and NMU Rec Sports is hosting a series of water safety events this week, including CPR classes, swim lessons, and water rescue demonstrations that are open to everyone.

"We want to really make them more aware of what to do if they themselves or their child or a friend are, for some reason, in an aquatic-related emergency, or how to prevent some of those injuries from occurring in the first place," says organizer Katie Theut.

All of the courses are free except the swimming lessons.
