MANISTIQUE -- The Community Youth Center in Manistique's Central Park is used as a site for voting, birthday parties, and even graduations, and it was sorely in need of a good paint job.
"Somebody has done something for them sometimes during their life, and it gives them an opportunity to help someone else out in need," said Volunteer Coordinator Heather Blount.
The U.P. AmeriCorps members also built flower boxes near US-2, and they weeded, planted, and thinned out flower beds at the Blanchard Center.
The old Lincoln School is now the Blanchard Center. It houses Habitat offices, a volunteer center and a building supply store.
The goal was to improve the lives of Schoolcraft County residents.
"Sometimes you don't even need a pat on the back," said AmeriCorps member Claire Kitzman. "Just knowing that you're doing something to better someone else's life is a good feeling."
The U.P. AmeriCorps signature service project started a day early to fit in with members' schedules.
For them, it's really a labor of love.
"We don't receive a salary," Blount added. "These are all non-profit agencies that we are serving with."
Blount said the three spruced up project sites will really make a difference to Manistique residents, and hopefully it will spur them to think of ways they can give back, too.
