About 60 Scouts put together the new homes for fish that will be put into the basin by the Marquette B.L.P.
MARQUETTE -- An unlikely partnership between the Marquette B.L.P. and area Boy Scouts could help increase the fish population in the area.
About sixty Boy Scouts, along with their adult leaders, teamed up with the Marquette Board of Light and Power Saturday afternoon. The Scouts built seven fish cribs in three locations in and around the Tourist Park Dam site.
The Scouts built a timber structure that will then be put underwater in the basin. Once algae develops on the crib, bait fish will feed off of it, and in turn, that will attract game fish.
The B.L.P. will eventually be stocking the basin with bluegill, perch, and small mouth bass.
"I just think that it's a very good thing to do. It's a very unique process, especially for me and the somewhat younger Scouts; it's a good thing to do," says Boy Scout Brendan Lochner.
After Saturday, all of the participating Scouts received their Fish and Wildlife merit badge.
