MARQUETTE -- Chemical spills and accidents can affect many patients and employees at once, and Wednesday, Marquette General's Code Orange team demonstrated what should be done in an emergency situation.

The Code Orange team is made of up hospital employees in non-clinical departments, such as I.T. or housekeeping.

Today's demonstration was part of an open house to show employees the hospital's capabilities in event of a trauma or chemical-related accident.

"Any chemical spill, as simple as someone being covered in diesel fuel," says Eric Williams.  "They're not going to be able to go in a closed room and get treated without making everyone sick.  And then all the way up to all the businesses that use the large quantity of chemicals that someone would be covered in; they're going to get cleaned up before they go into the E.D."

The team provided tours, discussed equipment and presented the safest way to bring victims of a chemical-related accident to the emergency department.
