DETROIT (AP) -- Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has been elected to the board of Marinette Marine Corporation.

Fincantieri-Cantieri Navali Italiani SpA, in a statement Wednesday, calls Granholm "an outstanding and visionary force in global business."  Wisconsin-based Marinette Marine is a subsidiary of  Fincantieri-Cantieri.

The company has a contract with the U.S. Navy to build ten combat ships at its facilities on the Wisconsin-Michigan boundary.  It has said that the contract will allow the hiring of up to 1,800 workers, including several hundred jobs in Michigan.

Granholm could not run again for governor last year because of Michigan's law limiting state-elected officials to two consecutive terms in office.

The Democrat previously was Michigan's attorney general and had been rumored to be in line for a cabinet post under President Barack Obama.
