IRON MOUNTAIN -- After some discussion the Iron Mountain School Board has decided not to combine the high school and middle school.
The proposal was killed at Monday night's school board meeting after parents and teachers expressed their concerns.
Combining the schools would have saved Iron Mountain between $40,000 and $60,000 per year.
The school board says they are being proactive as they prepare for cuts from the state, but after hearing the opposition, Superintendent Scott McClure says the school will go in a different direction.
"We obviously saw that our staff and our community weren't as comfortable as we were going in that direction," said McClure. "So rather than creating a wedge, we'll look at some other avenues and try and come up with the savings we need."
Iron Mountain has to have its budget in place by July 1.
