MARQUETTE -- American Transmission Co. is working to bring the transmission grid in the U.P. back on line after an apparent lightning strike to two transmission lines at around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.  The strike occurred between Oconto County and Dickinson County.

As a result of the lightning strike, two-thirds of the western U.P. experienced power outages.  According to American Transmission Co., a transmission line that also serves the U.P. was out of service for a planned outage, and the instability of the system triggered the automatic shutdown of Presque Isle Power Plant in Marquette to protect the system.

ATC expects the restoration of the Presque Isle Power Plant systems by early Tuesday afternoon.
