NEGAUNEE -- For high school seniors that plan to pursue a career in civil engineering, the best way to learn is through practical application.
The Negaunee High School Computer Drafting class recently participated in a national bridge building competition in Las Vegas, Nevada. Three teams from the high school were selected. They spent the entire year combining all of their skills to write a proposal, construct a suspension bridge, and give a presentation on what they came up with.
"You kind of got a professional look at what these people actually do," said senior Daniel Carlson. "I mean, you got to see what the real pros do, and also, you were able to add in your own little creative touches, make it your own, and it was just kind of cool to come out with something professional like that."
The three teams took first, second, and third place in the national competition.
The winning bridge was able to hold 680 pounds before it broke. The bridge itself weighed less than a pound.
