You can instantly go from the far north to the deep south this weekend by taking part in the American Cancer Society's Blues for Life fund-raiser
MARQUETTE -- The Flat Broke Blues Band is one of three taking part in this year's Blues for Life fund-raiser. In fact, they do every year because of their personal tie to the cause that benefits from the event.
"I am a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed six years ago, went through a year battle, and after I came out on the other side of that, I knew I wanted to still do something to stand up to cancer," says lead singer Lorrie Hayes.
With the support of her Relay for Life team, Lorrie's idea was born.
The Blues for Life fund-raiser is now one of the largest pre-Relay for Life events in the state.
"There's not a lot of control over the disease of cancer, but you can take control of your circumstances and how you handle them, and you can have a good attitude about getting through that," Hayes adds.
Lorrie used that good attitude to continue to stay focused on her music, with the help of her band.
"And she said don't stop, don't quit booking, let's keep moving forward, and the least we can do is play for something like this, which is for such a great cause. That why we're all in on it, because we want to help out because one of our own has been touched by it, so we help out one of our own," says Walt Lindala.
So what should you expect from this event?
"It is not a cancer event in the sense of it's somber and serious; there's some serious moments, but really it's a celebration of life and living," Lindala explains.
Also performing at the fund-raiser will be Fireside from Iron Mountain and Captain Woody and the Pirates of Boogie from Houghton.
This year's Blues for Life fund-raiser will take place this Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. at the L'Agniappe Cajun Creole Eatery in downtown Marquette.
Tickets are $25 and include the buffet meal and live music.
All proceeds from tickets and the silent auction go to the American Cancer Society.
