BERRIEN SPRINGS, MI (AP) -- Officials with a southwestern Michigan village support the idea of closing a fish ladder on the St. Joseph River because of the threat from Asian carp.
The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reports the Berrien Springs Village Council this week passed a resolution in support of "all efforts" to stop bighead and silver carp that have migrated northward on the Mississippi River and its tributaries since the early 1970s.
Village President Milt Richter says efforts covered by the resolution include closing fish ladders, like one in Berrien Springs, to protect inland waters. The St. Joseph River flows into Lake Michigan. Federal and state officials are working to keep the fish out of the Great Lakes.
Fish ladders are designed to help fish swim around artificial barriers such as dams or channels.
