MARQUETTE -- A group of Marquette residents gathered Wednesday night to enjoy the healing power of laughter.
Laughter yoga is a combination of breathing, stretching and belly laughter. Participants use playful exercises such as pretending to smell a rose or dabbing each other with laughter cream to evoke laughter.
Leader Eeve Miller saw a documentary about the practice and researched it before starting the group. She says laughing for no reason can help one relax, which is when the healing begins.
"Whenever your body relaxes deeply, you allow your body to heal. Laughter yoga doesn't heal anything, but it gets you to relax; your body can start to heal," said Miller.
The courses are part of "Hearts of Yoga," a student organization on NMU's campus.
Laughter yoga occurs biweekly with a more traditional yoga class on the off weeks.
