KINGSFORD -- Breitung Township voters will be making some critical decisions about the school's future in May.  Two proposals on the ballot could mean major school upgrades.

Proposal one calls for a new roof for the middle school and high school, as well as new carpeting and lockers.  A major technology upgrade is also included like new computers, smart boards, and wireless Internet.

Superintendent Craig Allen said the projects are essential, and the school can't be lagging behind in areas like technology.

"There's a lot of instructional technology that's out there that we're missing the boat on right now,” said Allen.  “The plan and goal is to keep our technology on the cutting edge and provide the optimal learning environment for kids to prepare them for the future."

Proposal two calls for changes outside of the classroom, like replacing the football field and the tennis courts.  The football field is currently a natural grass surface which would be replaced with a synthetic surface.  The change would allow the school to use the surface significantly more and require less maintenance.

No organized opposition has come out against either proposal, but some voters are questioning if this is the right time to make non-essential changes.

"The knee jerk reaction is why do it? Allen said.  “But as I researched it quite extensively, I see the value in many ways--the money saving value, the usage value, the safety value."

Both proposals have a zero levy net increase in the millage but will add two years to the debt retirement.

The school has scheduled a public information forum ahead of the May 3 election.
