WASHINGTON D.C. -- Congress continued to deliberate Tuesday over spending cuts that prevented a government shutdown last week.
The deal reached late last Friday cuts $39 billion from the 2011 fiscal year budget, and it signifies the largest federal budget cut in one year.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the measure Wednesday.
Republican 1st District Congressman Dan Benishek says he is unsure how he will vote, but he expects the measure to pass.
Deeper cuts are next on the agenda and Benishek says controlling the rising costs of entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security must be tackled.
"We're not going to change anybody's Social Security or Medicare for those 55 years of age or older," Benishek said. "That's not going to happen. But, the system is not going to exist as it is if we don't do something. If we wait 30 years the whole system is going to be bankrupt. To do nothing is irresponsible."
President Obama will be giving a speech on his plan to cut the federal debt on Wednesday.
