MARQUETTE -- The Marquette City Commission discussed an ordinance that would allow medical marijuana dispensaries within the city limits.

The ordinance calls for the licensing of growers of medical marijuana with several rules and regulations.  Among them, dispensaries would have to keep all product in a locked area, not operate within 1,000 feet of schools and not distribute between 7 pm and 7am.

The ordinance is designed to keep dispensaries in the business section of the city and away from residential areas.

"With the ordinance that we put together, it alleviates a lot of the concerns that I have and should also address concerns the community should have as well," said Marquette City Chief of Police, Mike Angeli.

The commission will have a public hearing for citizen input on April 25 before deciding whether or not to adopt the ordinance.

If adopted, it would take effect 30 days after being posted.
