ESCANABA -- Between February and March, the Public Health Clinic of Delta and Menominee County reported five cases of Syphilis.
It's the first time in 10 years that they treated Syphilis while it was still in its symptomatic, or primary and secondary stage.
Syphilis is a curable infection that's caused by bacteria.
The chances of getting it increase with multiple partners and unprotected sex.
Treatment involves a blood test and an injection of an antibiotic.
"If you're noticing anything unusual, you should be going into your doctors for testing or coming here to the health department," said Jennie Miller, Coordinator, Communicable Disease. "We do offer low-cost testing. It is a blood test and we do recommend that people get tested for HIV along with Syphilis."
The later stages are initially invisible. If left untreated, the disease may damage the brain, nerves, and blood vessels.
