MARQUETTE -- April is Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness Month, and Friday, volunteers placed pinwheels in front of the YMCA to raise awareness. The pinwheels were provided by the Marquette and Alger Child Abuse Council for the event which is in its third year.
The YMCA is one of the member agencies on the council and had placed the pinwheels in front of their building in conjunction with their community connect event being held Saturday.
A group of children that were attending a YMCA program volunteered to help place the pinwheels.
"We asked if they wanted to help plant some pinwheels, and they all jumped up and down and volunteered," said Steve Rudness of the Child Abuse Council. "And as you can see, they were having a great time doing it, so it was a lot of fun to watch."
Statistics show that six percent of Marquette and Alger County children are victims of abuse and 20 percent currently live in poverty.
