DETROIT (AP) -- Standardized tests scores for Michigan school children have risen in math and social studies while falling in reading.

The state released results Thursday from the Michigan Educational Assessment Program tests given last fall to students in grades three through eight.  Ninth graders also took a social studies test.

The percentage of students who were proficient or better in math rose in grades five through eight from a year earlier.  The percentage of proficient third graders remained steady at fall 2009's 95 percent, and fell one point to 91 percent for fourth graders.

Reading scores fell in grades three, six, seven and eight and were flat in grades four and five.  Social studies scores rose in grades six and nine, the two grades tested.
