MARQUETTE -- A group of U.P. citizens has formed a new environmental coalition, and they're calling it WAVE.
On Tuesday, representatives from the group took a letter to Governor Snyder's Upper Peninsula representative in Marquette. In the letter, WAVE is calling for an immediate halt to construction of the controversial nickel and copper Eagle Mine on the Yellow Dog Plains.
Along with the letter is a petition signed by more than 15,000 people.
"We're going to be positive, like a wave building, to support our U.P. and make it a better place," said Lillian Heldreth of WAVE. "That's the real goal of WAVE."
The group is requesting an in-person meeting with Governor Snyder.
There have been protests in the past about environmental quality suffering once mining operations begin.
Kennecott officials have told TV6 in the past that they're committed to keeping the area clean and protected.
