Studies show that one in six students experience bullying, and a forum next week will address what kind of actions the state should take against the problem.

Northern Michigan University will hold a public forum about bullying at the request of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission.  The commission will then make recommendations to the governor for possible legislation.

The forum will contain presentations by experts and students as well as public comment in the second hour.

Participants in the forum say guidelines are needed to address both school and workplace bullying.

"We need clear guidance from the state on what schools should and should not be doing to address the problem and what should happen in work places," said Allan McEvoy of the NMU Sociology Department.  "I think also there's a need for training both in the workplace and in school settings on how to recognize and how to address and how to remediate problems of bullying."

The forum will take place on April 5 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Reynolds Recital Hall.
