MARQUETTE -- UPDATE: March 25th, 2011 3:00 p.m.

No indictment for Gary Mikulich, at least not yet.

Mikulich is the Kingsford man accused of leaving a package containing bomb components in front of a federal building in Detroit.

Although the alleged crime was committed in Detroit, Gary Mikulich was arrested Thursday at his Kingsford home.

That's why his initial court appearance was held in federal court here in the U.P.

Now authorities are trying to determine what comes next.

When 42-year-old Gary Mikulich was asked by Judge Timothy Greeley Friday morning whether he had ever been treated for mental health issues, or whether he'd ever been prescribed medications, Mikulich said no.

That's not true, according to a statement from a member of Mikulich's family.

In the statement released to TV6, the family member claims Mikulich was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia about 18 years ago.

The statement goes on to say that at one point he was confined to a mental hospital, and while hospitalized, refused to take recommended medications on a daily basis.

Friday in court, Judge Greeley also referred to an FBI affidavit, which stated that the Iron Mountain Police Department had often received complaints from Mikulich.

The affidavit states that "all of these messages sent by Mikulich appear on letterhead stating: 'nominated President of the United States of America,' and are 'messages addressed from President Mikulich.'

In court Friday, Mikulich also told Judge Greeley he was a member of the Secret Service, and the U.S. Marshals.

After hearing that, the judge told both attorneys that he was seriously concerned about Mikulich.

"Before anything else happens, the judge has to be comfortable that he is competent to stand trial, that's step one in the proceedings, he has to be competent," says U.S. Assistant Attorney Maarten Vermaat.  "If he is, then we can go forward.  The judge was not comfortable at this point that he was competent, and so the judge ordered an assessment to determine whether or not he was competent to stand trial."

Mikulich will soon be sent a federal prison facility somewhere in the country for a battery of tests and evaluations, which should take a few months.

He will then appear back in federal court in Marquette where the judge will make a final ruling based on the findings.

Gary John Mikulich, 42, was in Marquette Federal Court Friday for an initial appearance.

U.S. Federal Magistrate Timothy Greeley stated that Mikulich must go through a competency hearing to see if Mikulich is competent to stand trial.

letter was released by Mikulich's family detailing his history of mental illness.

The Kingsford man was arrested after explosive components were tracked back to him from an incident at the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit.  Mikulich has a history of complaining about the FBI to local authorities.

Details of Mikulich's arrest can be found here.
