L'ANSE -- Baraga County Memorial Hospital reports that it'll be laying off some of its employees and reducing the hours of others as the result of big losses for the first five months of the current fiscal year.
The total net loss, according to the hospital, is $879,653. That's in addition to last year's net loss, which was $1,127,077. As a result, hospital management announced that seven positions will be laid off or eliminated, and 29 positions will be reduced in hours. Ten of the 29 positions will be reduced to the point of losing benefits.
Employees were officially notified of the changes Wednesday.
"There have been a lot of extremely difficult decisions being made," said BCMH CEO Tim Zwickey. "All the changes are being implemented in order to preserve local health care for the citizens of Baraga County and surrounding areas."
The staffing changes will result in an approximate $720,000 reduction to operating costs, according to hospital officials.
