ESCANABA -- The Escanaba Public Library has an online, interactive foreign language program called Mango.
But adults aren't the only ones who learn from it.
"Cara, right? Can you say la cara?" asks Shannon Carley, Seth’s mom.
Four-year-old Seth has been learning Spanish for the last two months.
Little Pim is the kid-friendly version of Mango.
“I just put them on Spanish because it's such a common language,” Carley explains. “And we have friends who are learning Spanish. But, Little Pim, Seth liked right away."
The top three languages kids try are Spanish, Russian, and German. And Seth has already picked up a little Spanish.
“He'll be washing his hands,” Carley said. “And from the video, I taught him what soap was. So he's repeating soap and repeating the Spanish word for soap over and over."
El jabon is soap," explains Seth.
And he doesn't need too much help to get going.
“Well, we'll ask him if he wants to go on it,” Carley said. “And I'll get the computer started. But he can go through the whole program himself."
Shannon says she plans on trying it out herself.
“I've went on the website,” Carley said. “I took Spanish in high school, and I’m very rusty right now."
It only takes a library card and pin number to sign up for the Mango language program. The Escanaba Public Library and the Portage Lake District Library are the only libraries in the entire U.P. that offer this free online interactive service.
