HOUGHTON -- While the devastation in Japan is far away, the situation hits close to home for at least one international student at Michigan Tech.

Tech senior Motoyuki Kidokoro says he feels helpless watching the destruction unfold in his native country, but he's happy to know most of his friends and family are safe.

He has been in contact with his parents who live west of Tokyo and say they're doing well, all things considered.

However, one of his best friends was in Sendai at the time of the earthquake and tsunami and is still missing.

"Another friend called his parents to tell them, and they haven't heard anything from him, so I'm waiting," said Kidokoro.

Kidokoro doesn't have any plans to return to Japan in the near future, but he says he'd like to hold a local fund-raiser to help his country.
