MARQUETTE -- The "W" community center in Sawyer has been closed for nearly two years due to a lack of funding, but many are still fighting to reopen it.

The Marquette County Board of Commissioners spent the majority of Tuesday night's meeting discussing the fate of the building, which has been a controversial subject since West Branch Township pulled funding for the "W" in 2008.  Whether the building should be sold, leased, or auctioned off were among the topics discussed.

The board ultimately passed two motions regarding the "W".  One called for a joint meeting between the Marquette County Board and West Branch Township to discuss options for the "W".  The other asked that Hand Up President Lisa Johnson, who is spearheading efforts to reopen the center, meet with the Northern Initiatives' president to go over the "W" business plan.

"To have this resource available to us, it really is a gem as long as we treat it that way.  Some people choose to treat it like an eyesore, and this is not an eyesore," said Johnson.

Dates have not been set for either of the meetings.
