As of right now, NMU does not screen applicants using social networking sites
MARQUETTE -- As Facebook has grown, many university admissions offices are using the social network to look into prospective students.
Some high school students fear institutions will judge them by their Facebook profiles and not their academic credentials.
Northern Michigan University admissions officers say that they do not use the social network to judge prospective students in the admissions process, but they still recommend that all students watch what material they put on their profiles.
"I know high school guidance counselors around the country, too, are struggling as they advise students about the college planning process, to keep in mind any info that ends up being posted about them is potentially fair game," says NMU Admissions Director Gerri Daniels.
While NMU does not use Facebook to screen applicants, they do, however, have a presence on Facebook, including fan pages, prospective student groups, and alumni groups.
