IRON MOUNTAIN -- The Olympic games aren't for another year, but Iron Mountain students competed in their own version Thursday...the Reading Olympics.
The event is similar to a spelling bee, but quizzes students on books instead of words. Those involved read books assigned to them and answer trivia questions in teams of two or three.
Thursday's event was a district final involving just Iron Mountain students with a regional final to be held later in March.
The competition has been going on for more than a decade and teachers say it has proven to be a good teaching tool.
"It's great to see when they learn those things and they know the answers and they're beaming and they compete and they're having fun and they're sharing experiences with kids from our district and kids from other districts," said Principal Bob Strang. "It's great to see."
Thursday's winners will advance to the regional final March 22 and compete against schools across the U.P.
