The Copper Dog Weight Pull took place Saturday morning
CALUMET -- After a 20-year hiatus, a sled dog activity returned to Calumet Saturday morning. It's called the Copper Dog Weight Pull.
One dog will pull one weighted sled across a finish with the encouragement of a trainer. They start the competition off with 200 pounds of weight on the sled, and if the dog is successful, they'll move on to the next category.
This year the pull was novice-focused in hopes of inspiring some sort of a professional competition with a purse next year.
Organizers also hope to draw a spectator crowd to the sport.
"It's great fun. Once you get up to those bigger weights and get a couple dogs going at it, and it's just real fast, because once you get down to fewer dogs, it just goes really fast. Those weights keep climbing quickly. Once you get into that, it just gets really fun, and people really get into it."
The weight pull is a sled dog activity that is also popular in other parts of Michigan, as well as Minnesota and Wisconsin.
