WASHINGTON, DC -- The legal battle over Asian carp is not over. Now, Michigan senator Debbie Stabenow and representative Dave Camp will introduce more legislation designed to block Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes through Chicago-area waterways.
Stabenow and Camp previously sponsored bills that would have forced closure of those shipping locks, but those measures failed.
The new legislation being proposed would require the Army Corps of Engineers to come up with a plan for severing the man-made links between the Mississippi River basins and the Great Lakes. The deadline for the plan would be 18 months.
Scientists are saying that Asian carp could damage native fish populations if they are able to enter Lake Michigan.
