ESCANABA -- It takes a lot of effort and a lot of money to fund the Salvation Army's mission to decrease homelessness in Schoolcraft and Delta Counties.

For the last two years, help has come from a grant provided by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.  But that two-year stimulus money is set to run out on September 30, 2011.  The cut will reduce the funds used for their Rapid Re-Housing Project.

Now the Salvation Army will have to seek help from other area charities.

"Jobs, there's very little security anymore, but if we can get somebody stable and in their own housing and their children are safe and secure, the chances are they'll be better citizens and better at school," says Major Bill Cox of the Salvation Army.

Last year, the Salvation Army was able to help 71 families apply for permanent housing.
