MARQUETTE -- The Marquette City Commission met Monday night, and one hot item on the agenda was the Waterfront Safety Task Force.
After about six months of review, the task force's chairman presented their preliminary report and recommendations to the commission to help prevent drownings in Lake Superior. There were four drownings in Marquette alone last summer.
The task force pieced together a 50-page booklet of facts, figures, and suggestions.
"It's an accumulation really of six months of research, data collection; we had four sub committees that addressed the four tenants of our charge--education and awareness, the beach support, float support and emergency preparedness--so we've basically looked at all those different areas," said Gary Gustafson of the Waterfront Safety Task Force.
Their main recommendation was educating the community and visitors. They suggest placing maps in hotels and the visitor's bureau, indicating safe and unsafe swimming areas. The commission commended the report calling it professional.
They sent the booklet to city staff for review.
