HOUGHTON -- In honor of American Heart Month, Portage Health held its third annual Heart Health by the Numbers event in Houghton Wednesday night.

More than 100 people held some important numbers in hand as they listened to Dr. Thomas LeGalley explain what it all means.

Most of the crowd had picked up the results of a free blood test as they entered the presentation.

As Dr. LeGalley talked about healthy lipid levels, the audience followed along, comparing their own numbers.

"Heart disease is still the number one cause of death in the country, and it does become more and more prevalent as people get older," said LeGalley.  "So I think it's really important as people age that they pay more attention to their numbers."

Of course it's never too late to reduce your heart disease risk.  Dr. LeGalley suggested several lifestyle changes including getting active and quitting smoking.
