Jeff Thornton is hired pending negotiations

NEGAUNEE -- The Negaunee City Council held a special meeting this evening to go over the contract for new city manager Jeff Thornton.

Earlier this month, the position was offered to Thornton pending negotiations of a contract.  Council members discussed the ins and outs of the document tonight which will include health care benefits, life insurance, a pension, 22 personal days, and possibly moving expenses.  Thornton's salary will start at $65,000.  They'll offer him a two-year deal, with a possible negotiation of another year.

"So we're looking at, if you make a long contract at this present time, it may have to be changed simply because of financing that's available," explains Mayor Michael Haines.

The city council hopes to have Thornton begin his city manager duties by the middle of March.
