The free fishing weekend is sponsored by the DNR
AU TRAIN -- Colder temperatures than we felt earlier this week and clear skies for most of the day Saturday meant beautiful conditions for fishing derby participants.
About 130 adults and 40 children took part in the Munising Moose Lodge 27th annual Fishing Derby on Au Train Lake this weekend.
Organizers say the goal of the event is to bring families together. And there were plently of them out on the lake, fishing and enjoying time with one another.
"It's geared to be a family event, that's why there's a free fishing weekend this year from the DNR, and that allows them not to have to have licenses for everyone, and they can take one day and come out and fish," says volunteer Gary Kivela. "We take advantage of that by offering a little bit of a contest for them to participate in. The kids really get a kick out of it."
The fishing derby was held from seven in the morning until three in the afternoon.
