A '5' is optimistic

MARQUETTE COUNTY -- On a scale of one to ten, race organizers rate the trail conditions a five, and they say that rating is optimistic.

In addition to the moisture on the trails, the mushers will also be running on gravel in some areas.

Race organizers want to assure all participants that their safety and the safety of their sled dogs is their top priority, but they want to be honest and upfront with every musher about the conditions of the trails.

"We've made the decision not to cross Slapneck Creek nor to cross the AuTrain Basin...they're not safe," said U.P. Sled Dog Association President Pat Torreano.

A trail crew worked on the trails until very late Thursday night and all day Friday.
