A powerful low spinning off to our north is bringing big changes to our weather today.
Wind gusts approaching 70 mph have already been reported in the Keweenaw Peninsula, and Stannard Rock reported an 81 mph gust earlier. These high winds figure to stick around all through the afternoon, as well. The Keweenaw and eastern areas, including Alger and Luce county, will see the highest winds, which will whip onshore from the west-northwest. Gusts up to 50-60 mph will be a regular occurrence, so power outages, downed trees and limbs, and some difficulty driving will be issues we'll contend with.
The other part of the equation today is colder air being ushered in on these stiff winds. Temperatures have already reached their maximum for Friday and will continue to fall all through the afternoon. By the time the UP 200 kicks off, expect temperatures in the teens to near 20. However, this is a blessing in disguise--the trails won't be suffering through anymore snow melt and may actually pick up a fresh layer of snow, especially as you head into Alger County and points east.
Looking into the weekend, the entire U.P. could be seeing some snow on Sunday. Keep up to date on that at our weather page.
