Encouraging trade between Michigan and Canada
MARQUETTE -- According to the Canadian General Consul, 14,000 jobs in the U.P. depend on trade with Canada.
On Friday, he visited Marquette to encourage the creation of an international trade crossing. It's a project that proposes the erection of a second bridge to connect Detroit and Windsor in Canada. The existing Ambassador Bridge is now 82 years old.
Canada projects traffic increase in the coming years and says it's important to foster our relationship with an improved transportation system that both areas can prosper from.
"People travel back and forth all the time for reasons of tourism, to visit friends and family, and to go fishing," said Roy Norton, Canadian General Consul. "The connections, I think, are pretty pronounced, deep, and welcome. We're a lot like you and you're a lot like us."
Bridge construction is estimated to cost $1.5 billion.
This was the first visit of the new Canadian General Consul to the U.P.
