MICHIGAMME TOWNSHIP -- A Wisconsin man is dead after apparently crashing into a tree while driving on a trail in Michigamme Township.
According to the Michigan State Police, troopers were called out to Trail #8 near County Road IDA around 11 p.m. Thursday. They found 48-year-old Gilbert Herrin of Waunakee, Wisconsin, lying on the trail near his snowmobile.
Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
A fellow snomobiler called in the crash. That man had been driving ahead of Herrin and stopped at an intersection. He turned back when the victim did not show up as expected.
Troopers believe that Herrin lost control of the snowmobile on a curve, hitting a tree. Excessive speed is believed to be the only factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
Assisting the State Police were Michigamme-Spur Township First Responders, Bell Hospital EMS, and the Marquette County Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue Unit.
