UPPER PENINSULA -- President Obama is visiting Northern Michigan University to showcase the integration of wireless and broadband Internet in our education system.
NMU has integrated the students and the City of Marquette with the Internet, but the Upper Peninsula as a whole is a different story.
According to Connect Michigan's website, only 75 percent of households in the U.P. have access to broadband, and only 84 percent of those homes have the most basic broadband available.
Connect Michigan's data also suggests that 20,229 households in the U.P. don't have access to broadband at all.
Connect Michigan is an initiative to get broadband to areas where it isn't or enhance areas where broadband is limited.
If you're interested in checking your broadband speed, check out Connectmi.org and test your connection speed. The data gathered by Connect Michigan will be released on the national broadband map, scheduled to be released no later than February 17, 2011.
