The DNRE is looking for new regulations to be imposed
DETROIT (AP) -- Environmental officials say thousands of feral pigs are entrenched across Michigan where they pose a threat to farms and native species.
The Detroit News reports the state Department of Natural Resources and Environment has declared the bristly swine an invasive species and given the Legislature until July 8 to either impose regulations to breeding and confining the animals or do nothing, which would ban the ownership of the tusked pigs.
The agency estimates there some 3,000 to 5,000 feral pigs in more than 65 of Michigan's 83 counties. The animals often are the offspring of imported Russian or Eurasian boars that escaped from area game preserves.
But game preserve owners say the numbers are exaggerated.
