More than 800,000 gallons were spilled into the river last summer
PORT HURON (AP) -- A Michigan congresswoman says work is expected to begin next week to replace a pipeline under the St. Clair River.
Republican U.S. Rep. Candice Miller of Harrison Township announced the project in a news release. The statement says work is expected to be finished by spring.
The Times Herald newspaper reports that Enbridge Ind., the Canadian company that owns the line, announced plans for the project shortly after another portion of the pipeline ruptured in July, spilling 820,000 gallons of crude oil near Marshall.
Endbridge says it plans to replace about 3,500 feet of the 30-inch pipeline. Pressure in the line was reduced in 2009 after a dent was discovered in the section beneath the St. Clair River.
The pipeline, built in 1969, runs from Griffith, Indiana to Sarnia.
