IRON MOUNTAIN -- One item expected to be in Governor Snyder's 2011 budget is more funding for a popular state tourism campaign, Pure Michigan.
During his State of the State address, Governor Snyder proposed setting aside $25 million per year to fund the Pure Michigan campaign.
Pure Michigan proved to be helpful to the U.P. in 2010, which saw an 11 percent increase in tourism from the previous year. Dickinson County also saw a five percent tourism increase with many new travelers coming from out of state.
"With the Pure Michigan campaign hitting Wisconsin, Illinois, and farther out; that Midwest travel sometimes is closer to us than it is to lower Michigan, and so to get the exposure out there really helps us," said Chris LaVigne, Dickinson County Tourism Director.
Snyder's 2011 budget will need to pass through the Michigan legislature before it can take effect.
