HOUGHTON -- Winter Carnival is less than a week away, and teams participating in the month-long statue competition are putting in work whenever they can.

A few sculptors got an earlier start Friday afternoon with what is likely to be a long weekend of statue building.

The ROTC Team added an extra design element after running ahead of schedule.

Friday, they had enough people to carve, shovel, and add handfuls of slush, all at the same time.

"If it gets too warm or too cold, they cancel statue construction," said ROTC Officer Nat Schenck.  "We almost had a problem one day because it was too cold, but I don't think they did cancel it.  We've just been working right along."

Now the teams need to figure out how they'll fit everything in and finish on time.  The all-nighter is next Wednesday.
