MARQUETTE -- The Marquette City Commissioners gave their opinions on Kennecott's decision to abandon the Woodland Road project and instead haul their ore through the city.

Mayor Kivela added an item to the meeting's agenda to discuss Kennecott's decision.

While opinions of the mining company differed, members all agreed that the proposed truck route is unacceptable.

"We have no intention of allowing trucks to run through this area.  Period.  Obviously there's contingencies, but we're in the mode of support and help for a resolution and get the road done and get the project rolling forward," said Kivela.

The commission also listened to public comment against the mine and the route and assured residents that their comments are being taken into consideration.

In the meantime, the mayor said the city will continue to work with Kennecott on coming up with a reasonable solution.
