The two women huddled under a large pine tree overnight in frigid temperatures
HOMESTEAD TWP. -- After spending the night in sub-zero temperatures without any survival equipment, authorities in Florence County were able to find two women who had become lost while cross-country skiing. They left to go skiing Saturday afternoon around two and had still not returned at six Sunday morning.
That's when one of the women's husbands called police.
The search began shortly thereafter.
It didn't take long for a conservation warden to find them walking along a trail about a mile south of the La Salle Falls trailhead in Homestead Township.
According to the Florence County Sheriff's Office, the two 55-year-old women had become disoriented and could not find their way out of the woods. They huddled under a large pine tree until it became light again.
The Norway woman declined medical treatment.
The Homestead woman was taken by ambulance to Dickinson County Memorial.
Police are reminding people to prepare for winter conditions by always carrying survival gear.
