MARQUETTE -- Preserving quality, early childhood education was the goal, and recently, an agreement between the Marquette School Board and the Marquette County YMCA did just that.

The agreement provides $48,000 to the YMCA, from Marquette Area Public Schools, as part of federal stimulus funding.

Funds from the grant are earmarked for early childhood education programs at Vandenboom.  And that funding has made a big difference.

"This money has been very crucial for both M.A.P.S. and the YMCA to develop this program that's so important for our community," says Lisa Coombs, Marquette County YMCA CEO.  "There was not, and now there is, an early childhood program that allows kids to get fundamental education pieces to be able to long-term succeed."

The same amount was distributed to the YMCA last year, but without a formal agreement.
