LANSING -- A downstate legislator has introduced a proposal in Lansing to make Michigan's legislature part-time.

Similar proposals have failed in the past.

Republican State Representative Dave Agema of Grandville introduced the measure Wednesday.  It would call for amending the state's constitution.

Most states, in fact, do have part-time legislatures, but Michigan does not.  Proponents of the measure say it would save money and make the legislators more efficient.

Agema's proposal would also change Michigan's term limits law, allowing legislators to serve a maximum of 16 years combined in the House and Senate.  Current law restricts House members to serve three terms of two years each and senators to two terms of four years each.
