But its lead in the Readers Digest poll is narrow

GRAND MARAIS -- Grand Marais is still ahead in the national Readers Digest poll that could help the community rebuild its 1200 foot breakwater, but its lead is a narrow one.

As of Friday afternoon, Grand Marais had 542,000 votes.  Second place was Fairbury, Illinois with 524,000 votes, and Albion, Michigan was in third place.

Voting ends on February 7, and the winner will receive $40,000 for its community project.  The final 10 days are here, so Grand Marais needs your help for the final push.

Grand Marais needs to rebuild its breakwater because the harbor is filling up rapidly with sand.  Hoped-for federal support to rebuild the breakwater fell through.

The prize money would barely be a down payment for the project, but winning the poll would also mean that Readers Digest would feature an article on the project in its May issue.
