The Escanaba YMCA has a new exercise program
ESCANABA -- Ditch the workout, join the party.
Believe it or not, doing just that is part of the Escanaba YMCA’s new fitness program called Get up and Go. Get up and Go is a 13-week weight loss regimen where members can choose from a variety of fitness courses.
The most popular is Zumba.
"The Zumba is definitely the new fitness craze right now throughout the nation,” said YMCA Membership Director, Hadele Peacock. “People are just really enjoying the aspect that doesn't feel like a workout. It just feels like everyone's dancing and having fun partying in the gym."
Those who are looking for something less Latin and more traditional can choose from other courses such as pilates, cycling, and lifting weights.
No matter what you choose, the variety of classes are aimed at keeping exercise challenging but fun.
Zumba instructor, Holly Niswonger, said, "Hopefully we'll reach even more people in the community to come out, give something new a try that maybe they wouldn't do. Otherwise, find out that there's some kind of exercise that they really enjoy."
The YMCA is hoping that people stick to staying healthy, and the Get up and Go program comes with a big incentive.
Peacock said, "With the 13 weeks, we hope that they get acclimated to this new lifestyle and stick with it. Of course the grand prize is also a plus."
Participants who complete the Get up and Go program will be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 travel voucher of their choice.
People who are interested in trying out the program can purchase a one-day pass for nine dollars. Get up and Go runs from now until April 1.
