MARQUETTE -- People are walking without fear of slipping on the ice or baring single digit temperatures due to a special program.
The free Walk the Dome program made a comeback last year after Blue Cross Blue Shield, Marquette General Health, and Northern Michigan University partnered and donated nearly $7,000 each to make possible. That money goes to the facility and staff costs, and naturally, the highest participation in this fitness alternative comes during the winter months.
Some say they go to the Superior Dome to walk every day.
"I cancelled my trip to Florida this year, so I'll just continue walking in the dome. I very much appreciate it," said walker Clyde Randell.
"What's amazing about it is, it is not just the retirees who are walking, there's mothers with strollers, NMU students, a lot of business people come during their lunch hour," added Assistant Athletic Director Carl Bammert.
Walking hours are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The space is available to anyone, free of charge.
