The Munising 300 is still a few weeks away, but residents constructed the climbing tower
MUNISING -- The cold weather made it the perfect afternoon for Munising residents to begin their preparations for Ice Fest Saturday.
Construction of the ice climbing tower began Saturday morning in Lakeshore Park and continued through the afternoon.
This is the 22nd year for the Ice Festival, and organizers are hoping their tower promotes ice climbing in the area. The 32-foot tower took awhile to build, but those working on it seemed to have their plan mastered.
"The box that you see is actually an eight-foot square sleeve," says Tom Dolaskie of the Chamber of Commerce. "On the inside of it, it's lined with plastic, and we take the Pettibone donated by Drew Excavating and we slide that sleeve up, and it slides around the frozen column of snow that we've packed inside of it."
The ice climbing tower will stay up until the Munising 300, which is the last weekend in February.
